The driver smashed into the shop, shattered the windows and dragged the couple along just moments after they were sat outside the bakery in Tingkaki.

The driver was reportedly in a state of shock following the crash and was also rushed to the local hospital in Kos.

Local police told The Sun: “We have a 69-year-old British tourist fighting for his life here.

“His 68-year-old spouse has been pronounced dead. This is a tragic incident, unprecedented in every way.”

Both the woman and her husband were rushed to the hospital after the tragic accident – but the wife succumbed to her injuries shortly after.

It is understood that the couple were holidaying in the tourist hotspot.

Police added: “The jeep didn’t belong to him, it belonged to another resident on the island.

“Instead of breaking, he erroneously stepped on the gas and lost control.”

They said that the jeep then “rammed into the glass facade of the shop which shattered, immediately wounding the English lady”.

The driver has since been arrested and will appear before a local prosecutor on charges of negligent manslaughter.

The owner of the bakery told local media: ” The driver got out of the jeep in a state of shock.

“He was holding his head, screaming ‘what happened,  what have I done?'”

The husband is still in the hospital and is understood to be in “critical condition”.

It comes after another Brit tourist was killed after a person driving “in a rash and negligent manner” lost control of his rental car and crashed into him.

Harish Solanki, 86, died after being crushed into a wall at the picturesque village of Candolim, India.

His 81-year-old wife, Chandrakanta, sustained serious injuries, local media reported.

Driver Vicky Jain, 48, was arrested after driving into the couple with his rental car, which was badly damaged by the force of the incident.

Jain is from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, according to Indian news outlet Daijiworld.

He was driving on the main road through Candolim when he veered onto the wrong side of the carriageway and crashed into the pair, police reported.

The couple had reportedly left their hotel and were walking on the side of the road when the crash took place.

Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Solanki died that same evening.

His wife underwent treatment at a medical centre and remained in critical condition.

Meanwhile, another Brit toutist was found dead in a hotel garden in Turkey.

The 41-year-old tourist was found in his hotel in the Marmaris district of Muğla, before medical teams rushed to the scene and pronounced him dead.

Medical teams quickly pronounced the man dead at the scene after rushing to the site of the tragedy.
